Further Tory-Labour talks expected as May warns over threat to Brexit

It would mean letting the Brexit the British people voted for slip through our fingers. "But nevertheless the most important thing is to actually leave the European Union", she told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

It is the latest twist in a saga which leaves Britain, the world's fifth-biggest economy, struggling to find a way to honor a 2016 referendum vote to take the country out of the globe's largest trading bloc.

She warned the choice was now between leaving the European Union with a deal "or not leaving at all" as she seemed to finally ditch her long standing mantra of no-deal being better than a bad one. She said there was no choice but to reach out to the opposition Labour Party.

Challenged on whether she could accept the United Kingdom remaining in a customs union with Brussels, the Commons Leader said: "There are various different types of arrangement and those discussions are still ongoing".

"The vision we had of Brexit is fading away - and we are running out of time to save it", she wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

"My expectation, and I'm not party to the discussions, is that the Prime Minister will only seek to agree those things that still constitute Brexit". "There is a customs arrangement in the Prime Minister's deal which I have supported every time". Corbyn has said he was "waiting to see the red lines move" and had not "noticed any great change in the government's position".

The prime minister insisted she reached out to Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to deliver on the referendum result, and would not "stand for" the prospect of it being lost.

She said: "Obviously not".

The prime minister acknowledged that her plan to pull Britain out of the European Union had now been rejected by MP's three times, and after failing to win over her own party and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, May said "a new approach" was needed.

But a Downing Street spokesman said: "We have made serious proposals in talks this week, and are prepared to pursue changes to the Political Declaration in order to deliver a deal that is acceptable to both sides". If we can not secure a majority among Conservative and DUP MPs we have no choice but to reach out across the House of Commons.

In a clear attempt at placating her hard Brexiteer party MPs, May insisted that there are areas where the two main United Kingdom parties, Conservatives and Labour, agree. "That is the basis for a compromise that can win a majority in Parliament and winning that majority is the only way to deliver Brexit", she stressed.

The EU agreed to postpone the March 29 departure date, but gave Britain only until April 12 to pass May's original agreement, come up with a new plan and seek a further extension, or leave without an agreement or a transition period to smooth the way.

Members of UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party could move to resign en masse if the UK is forced to take part in European elections next month and extend its EU membership beyond the end of June.

Reports suggest Mr Tusk is recommending a longer postponement of one year, with a break clause in the case of earlier ratification, in a so-called "flextension" deal.
