Masahiro Tanaka finally gets 1st opening day victory

Luke Voit and Robinson Cano smashed first-inning home runs to power victories by the New York Yankees and New York Mets in Thursday's Major League Baseball 2019 US season openers.

Voit, whose home run traveled 428 feet, finished with four RBIs thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fifth. He allowed two runs and struck out five batters before retiring in the sixth inning.

Tanaka, who had been 0-2 with a 9.49 ERA in his three previous opening day starts, replaced Luis Severino, who did not make the start because of right shoulder injury.

In New York, Yankees designated hitter Voit blasted a three-run homer in the first inning. "Coming from warm Florida (spring training) to throw in the bullpen in single-digit temperatures in NY, I got the shivers", said Tanaka, who with the Yankees took losses on the 2015 and 2017 Opening Days and got a no-decision in 2016. Greg Bird also homered in the eighth.
