Some will become villains.

After initially testing the waters for more than a year with rumors of a third Walking Dead series potentially being on the way, AMC has made things official. "Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad", the network's announcement reads. The network dropped the news at the AMC Networks Summit in Manhattan, during which executives discussed plans for forthcoming programming.

The new The Walking Dead spin-off will be co-created by Scott Gimple, the chief content officer for the franchise, and Matt Negrete, the writer and producer behind The Walking Dead for the past five seasons.

The new series is the latest development in an ever-expanding Walking Dead universe that includes Kirkman's comic; the mothership series that will return for Season 10 in the fall; Texas-set spin-off Fear the Walking Dead, which returns for Season 5 on June 2; and a movie trilogy starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, the first of which is expected to go into production this year.

While The Walking Dead kicked off right at the beginning of the apocalypse, it looks like this spin-off will start down the line from when zombies first started eating people in the USA, long enough for its protagonists to have been teens or younger when it began. Negrete will serve as showrunner.

AMC is betting that a third series will have appeal at a time when ratings for some "Walking Dead" broadcasts have winnowed - a dynamic that is not atypical for a program that has been on the air since the fall of 2010, but is still concerning.

The country's original March 29 departure date was delayed last month to April 12 amid the paralysis in parliament. Any compromise between May's government and Labour is sure to inflame divisions within each party over Brexit.

No release dates are available yet, of course, but AMC's goal is to get this new Walking Dead project in front of viewers in 2020.

Gimple, chief content officer for the Dead franchise, wants to not let too many details out she said.

It's not clear whether or not some characters will cross over from The Walking Dead or Fear The Walking Dead, but it's definitely a possibility.

The yet-untitled series will center around two young female protagonists, according to Sarah Barnett, the president of AMC's entertainment networks, particularly because the young women in the flagship Walking Dead series "have resonated" strongly with audiences. "We are thankful to be working with some of the best creatives in the business to expand this Universe in new and exciting ways for our fans". "Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD's long history - I'm thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we've seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world".
