The draconian penal code, first introduced in 2013, has seen its implementation delayed due to widespread, worldwide condemnation. It will implement the harsh new penal code - which also mandates amputation of a hand and foot for theft - from Wednesday.

Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing and mortar shelling.

A defence spokesman said Pakistan violated the ceasefire around 7.40 am by shelling mortars and firing with small arms along the LoC in Shahpur and Kerni sectors of Poonch district.

Almost a dozen injured have been brought to government district hospital at Poonch, sources said, adding that mortar shells were falling in residential areas in Shahpur, Kerni and Mankote sectors of Poonch district.

A Pakistan-based group said it carried out the attack - the deadliest to take place during a three-decade insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir. "The Indian army was retaliating".
