Scant evidence that e-cigarette growth linked to 'renormalization' of teen smoking

The rapid spread of e-cigarette use among young teenagers has not slowed the decline in smoking in the same age group, much less reversed it, according to new research (AFP Photo/EVA HAMBACH) More Paris (AFP) - The rapid spread of e-cigarette use among young teenagers has not slowed the decline in smoking in the same age group, much less reversed it, according to a new study.

"Our research does not support the hypothesis that e-cigarettes "renormalised" youth smoking during a period of growing but largely unregulated use in the United Kingdom", the study concluded.

During that period, they found, the percentage of 13-to-15 years olds who had smoked at least once fell from 70 to 27, and the share of regular smokers dropped from 19 to five percent.

"However, this study demonstrates the success of public health efforts in reducing smoking among young people in the last 20 years and provides no evidence that e-cigarettes are reversing this".

"The sharp increase in the use of e-cigarettes has not led more British children to take up cigarettes or regard smoking as normal", The Guardian reports.

For 17-to-18 year olds, the gap closed, but the number of smokers was still 50 percent lower than users of e-cigarettes.

"The nature of e-cigarettes, and the landscape in which they are sold and used continue to change rapidly, and we need to continue to keep a close eye on how they affect young people".

This study was conducted by researchers from the universities of Cardiff, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling, and funded by the National Institute for Health Research.

The new findings were published online April 1 in Tobacco Control.

Similar questions were asked about alcohol and cannabis.

E-cigarettes have polarised opinion among public health professionals, amid fears that vaping might act as a gateway to regular smoking or prompt young people to view smoking as socially acceptable once again-referred to as 'renormalisation'.

Three other women later came forward to tell stories about awkward encounters with the former Vice President. I hear what they're saying. "I don't know him well", the president added.

Data on smoking were available for 248,324 respondents, while data on attitudes were available for 162,324 respondents.

"Favourable perceptions of regular smoking among this age group also fell at a faster rate after the proliferation of e-cigarettes, which would not be expected if smoking was in the process of being "renormalised", the authors concluded.

The study looked at nearly 250,000 responses to three separate surveys of 13-15 years olds in England, Scotland and Wales between 1998 and 2015.

The percentage of students who described trying a cigarette as "OK" fell from 36% in 2003 to 14% in 2014.

They said in the paper: 'Our results provide little evidence that renormalisation of smoking occurred during this period.

The use of e-cigarettes is known to have increased nationally among the general population in recent years.

But there's concern that some young people might take up vaping having never smoked previously.

"Meanwhile, e-cigarettes have become the most popular quit aid for adult smokers, which means fewer role models for smoking".

The potential long-term harms of the chemicals in e-cigarettes are still largely unknown.
