Mai Khao beach is close to Phuket International Airport "and a lot of tourists like to selfie during the plane landing and take off on the beachside". However, airport chiefs are threatening to block off the area and ban public access, insisting a flood of tourists could distract pilots and potentially lead to crash accidents.

But airport chiefs announced last week that people taking selfies could potentially cause an accident by distracting pilots, and that they meant to close a large chunk of the beach.

Anyone breaking the new rule would be fined or - more shockingly - executed: "The maximum penalty is the death sentence", warned Mr. Kaeothaithiam. You will have to pay the penalty with your life for taking photos of the runway area near the beach.

Deputy Chief of Phuket International Airport Wichit Kaeothaithiam on Thursday said, "people and tourists will not be allowed to enter this area to take photos", reports Bangkok Post.

Authorities in Phuket, Thailand are working to curb the number of visitors that flock to the famed Mai Khao beach, a picturesque location that has become popular thanks to its close proximity to Phuket International Airport.

Mr Kaeothaithiam believes tourists who take selfies on the beach are adding to the constant movement, which is increasingly becoming a serious concern.

He continued: "The airport wants to boost tourism revenues, but at the same time, it must make sure there will not be any problem with aviation regulations ..."

Numerous drone sightings resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights at London's Gatwick Airport in December 2018. The New York Post reported the woman had been straddling a fence that separates the airport and the beach when a blast of air from the jet's engines knocked her down.
