Enabling Chrome extensions on Microsoft Edge

Microsoft said late previous year it planned to swap out its own rendering engine used in Edge and swap in one based on Chromium, the open-source foundation used in Google's Chrome browser was well as in Brave, Opera and other popular browsers.

Microsoft is making the new browser available to developers as Canary and Developer builds, and will be offering daily or weekly updates. A Linux sibling of Microsoft Edge is yet to be confirmed, but given that the Chromium engine also supports this platform, there's no doubt that at some point in the future Microsoft would look into this project. In addition to those extensions, Microsoft will build sync support so users can access their favorites, browsing history, and other stuff on devices where chromium-based Edge will be available.

This week, Microsoft released the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser in three channels; Microsoft Edge Beta (coming soon), Dev, and Canary. Microsoft has had around 150 commits accepted into Chromium, which paves the way for a number of improvements to Edge and Chromium on Windows 10.

Chrome's dominance of the browser market is not unconnected with its array of features and the fact that it is powered by Chromium.
