Congressional Democrats are eyeing legislation that would affirm the right to abortion and counter new pro-life laws in a host of states, in a move that could expose divisions within the Republican Party over how far some of the states have gone.

"To the bill's many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians' deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God", Ivey said in a statement after signing the ban into law.

Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia recently approved bans on abortions once a foetal heartbeat was detected in week six, and 16 other states are looking to tighten their abortion laws.

This remark is the first comment that Donald Trump has made regarding the highly-disputed abortion issue, as earlier this week the Alabama State Senate passed a Conservative-led abortion bill, making almost all abortions illegal except when there is a "serious health risk" for the mother and when the unborn child has a "lethal anomaly".

"I don't support the Alabama law", Romney told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union".

Alabama's governor this month signed what was the most restrictive law in the country, outlawing abortions in all cases save for risk to the life of the mother or danger of serious adverse health consequences.

"I had friends who had illegal abortions and barely survived", said Hall, who for a time ran a clinic in Montgomery that provided abortion, birth control and other services.

"I am strongly pro-life, with the three exceptions rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother - the same position taken by Ronald Reagan", Trump tweeted.

'The Radical Left, with late term abortion (and worse), is imploding on this issue. "We must stick together and Win...." Democrats fought that notion, claiming conservatives were mischaracterizing the comments.

"No law is constitutional until the Supreme Court actually revisits Roe v Wade", said Alabama state Rep. Terri Collins.

Kelly Scott, the vice president of content at the Alabama Media Group, wrote in an editorial that it took less than 24 hours for more than 200 women to share their personal experiences and opinions on the law. This ongoing abortion debate will likely be a key topic for the Supreme Court this year.

They are right to criticize the law (and Robertson is right about the law's chances at the Supreme Court).

"You are seeing laws on both sides of this argument that are in the extreme", he said.

In the House, Republican leaders have tried to force votes to condemn legislation in Democrat-led states that have explicitly legalized abortion throughout pregnancy. Other states such as Georgia, Kentucky and OH have adopted so-called "heartbeat" abortion laws that prohibit the procedure once a heart beat is detected, typically around six weeks.

"The president knows that the conversation should stay on the rights of a baby past a certain point of gestation, a certain gestational age", the senior White House official said.
