"As the compact luxury SUV market continues to grow, building the NX in North America allows us to better serve our customers and dealers", North America CEO Jim Lentz said at an event attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other government officials.

"Toyota's operations in Canada are here to stay", said Volf, flanked by Trudeau at the plant located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Toronto.

A Toyota Canada spokesperson declined to be more specific about the announcement.

"The overwhelming majority of RAV4 vehicles produced for North America - including hybrid - will be produced in Canada", spokesperson Michael Bouliane told CBC News on Monday.

The current Lexus NX is built exclusively in Japan, and this move will mark the first time the striking crossover is built anywhere other than its home country.

"When we last chatted just a few weeks ago, we discussed the potential of this new Lexus mandate", Trudeau said.
