The Netherlands has won this year's Eurovision song contest.

His song, Bigger Than Us, scored just 13 points from the country jury vote and three from the public vote.

"Team Duncan" celebrates the first-place win by the Dutch-the first time since 1975-in the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, May 18, 2019. It earned just three points from the public vote, with those being awarded by Ireland.

But his performance failed to soar and did not connect with the worldwide crowd, which resulted in the United Kingdom finishing last for the first time since 2010.

A contestant from the Netherlands, Duncan Laurence, won the contest, with Italy's Mahmood and Russia's Sergey Lazarev coming second and third, respectively.

But others pointed to Germany's poor performance as a sign that this was not related to the politics of the European Union.

"You did the United Kingdom proud - always a tough gig to represent us, sorry!"

Hatari's song Hate Will Prevail, during which the leather- and latex-clad performers thrashed around a grenade-shaped globe as flames shot from the stage, came 10th of the 26 finalists.

The veteran pop star Madonna performed her guest-gig in the Israel-hosted Eurovision on Saturday, despite calls for boycott by the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

In a statement addressing the performance, the Palestinian Campaign For The Academic And Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) called the performance "immoral" in the face of legitimate human rights abuses. Organisers said it was not an approved part of the act.

The Eurovision debuted in the wake of World War II to heal a divided continent.

The performance also saw dancers falling to the ground while wearing gas masks, and concluded with Madonna and the U.S. rapper Quavo walking together as the words "wake up" appeared behind them. "Eurovision is a non-political event and Madonna was warned of this", reads the statement.

Although Madonna performing at the Eurovision stirred up controversy, she surprised many when two of her backup dancers, briefly appeared on stage wearing the Israeli and Palestinian flags on the back of their costumes and walked off stage arm-in-arm during her new song "Future". "The Eurovision Song Contest is a non-political event and Madonna had been made aware of this", it said, according to a report by Reuters.

Iceland's 2019 entry to Eurovision, punk band Hatari, held up a banner with the word "Palestine" and Palestinian flag colours while their vote was announced.
