According to reports, the 49-year-old American professional surfer attempted to kill self by hanging and was rushed to the Portland-area medical center.

Garcia posted a photo, showing a young, sun-kissed Garcia smiling widely at the camera while enjoying a snow cone. He has since changed the caption on his post - a photo of himself with Garcia - to read, "Vincent the 3rd checking pipe I don't think he is even looking at the lefts!"

'Wow it's been a insane ride since this photo was taken'. He was crowned world champion in 2000 and claimed the triple crown - awarded to the best surfer across three major events in Hawaii - a record six times.

Garcia had been open about battles with depression over the years, writing about his troubles in a post on Instagram in 2014.

'Depression is no joke, ' he posted at the time.
