Google Launches New $999 Glass 2 for Enterprise Customers

Rebranding Google Glass as an enterprise tool for blue-collar factory workers and doctors was a savvy move that breathed new life into the smart glasses.

Google said Glass has been used on the job by employees to view checklists or instructions and send inspection videos or photos. Today, Google is launching Glass Enterprise Edition 2.0, an upgraded version of its enterprise headset that has a significant computing boost. The design of the device is nearly identical, but Google has swapped out the chip on the inside and the new Glass 2 is now build on Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR1 platform. The company instead transitioned it away from the consumer market with Glass Enterprise Edition. That means the new device packs a "significantly more powerful" multi-core CPU, as well as an integrated AI engine, that allows for power savings, improved performance, support for computer vision, and advanced machine learning capabilities. Google has stepped up the quality of the onboard camera and now adds USB-C connectivity with fast-charge support for the 820 mAh battery.

Google is pricing this version of Glass at $999, though actual quotes will be for packages that include specifically-tailored software - for comparison, Microsoft's heavy-duty AR headset, HoloLens, is priced at $3,500. Though the original product didn't make much of a splash, running into a bit of controversy with its awkward looks, Google didn't give up on it.

Trump Trade War - Consumers are a casualty on both sides
Morgan Stanley analysts warned that a collapse of the trade talks and a lasting breakdown with higher tariffs on all U.S. US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, praised the administration's decision to delay the auto tariffs.

We got a peek at the second Glass Enterprise Edition following leaks earlier this year. Fuller", says Kothari. "We've been inspired by the ways businesses like these have been using Glass Enterprise Edition. It's also transitioning Glass from its experimental X division to Google proper.

This is where concept products are made and tested, but Google promises it would continue to be tested internally and "built for the future".

Google eventually launched Glass for enterprise in 2017.
