Labour Day, 1 May 2019: Why do we celebrate International Labour Day?

Happy Labour Day

Happy Labour Day

May Day is a significant day in history as it marked the onset of eight-hour day movement which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Also, Mrs Funmi Sessi, Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), advised the Federal Government not to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT), as a means of funding the 2019 budget.

Labour Day or International Workers Day is celebrated annually on 1 May to celebrate the working class and labourers across the world.

May Day is a special day and is important for all of us as the day remembers the contributions of individuals that helped in building the society.

The US Open Final: Who Will Make it?
The 34-year-old Swiss won the first two sets 6-4 and 7-5, forcing an injured and struggling Djokovic to retire in the third. If she’s at her best, then she’ll make it to the final and if she performs on the day the title will be hers.

Three days before the bombing, on May 1, 1886, tens of thousands had marched on Michigan Avenue in a campaign to reduce the customary 10- or 12-hour workday to eight hours. After efforts made by the workers and socialists, eight-hours was declared as the legal time for the workers in the national convention at Chicago in late 19th century by the American Federation of Labor. The labour day was first celebrated in India on May 1, 1923, in Chennai.

Singing in chorus, an activity that Danes do not need much encouragement to partake in, is closely connected to Labour Day. While anthems in Fælledparken no longer take place, local unions do still have them. Keep on passing and sharing the best wishes and messages of Labour Day.

People protest during Social Democrat leader Mette Frederiksen's speech at Fælledparken in Copenhagen on May 1st, 2018.

The occasion is also seen as an opportunity to enjoy a day off - many take to parks with picnics, cans of beer and a thermos full of coffee. While the day has different story for different countries, the main reason for Labour Day is unfair treatment of the labour class. International Labour Day is the ideal representation of how workers get together and showcase their strength, indicating how effectively they can struggle to bring in positive reforms for the working class of society. Even if not everyone gets the day off.
