Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe calls for more action against China over canola

China has cracked down on a number of Canadian agricultural exports including peas

The hits follow China blocking Canadian canola oil from Richardson International and Viterra on the basis of alleged contamination.

This talk comes amid reports that other Canadian commodities, like peas, soybeans and pork, are facing similar issues at the Chinese border.

The Conservative leader will argue that Trudeau has done little to address the canola feud since it erupted in recent months. "The same goes for farmers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario".

Sellers of soybeans, peas and pork are reporting paperwork and shipment delays.

The premier said it may be time for the federal government to take a hard look at how it is engaging in worldwide trade.

"Justin Trudeau sold this investment to Canadians as a way to improve trade between Canada and China". Ltd.'s executive back in December. "So we're kind of sitting here on the side lines hoping that diplomatic, the works behind the scene diplomatically will start to have an effect and get our markets opened again". Agricultural products, however, accounted for $5.8 billion worth of Canadian exports to China in 2017, compared to just $649 million for all commercial services-including tech-according to Statistics Canada data.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said he will be speaking to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the issue on Tuesday. "We're looking towards smoothing over these difficulties while at the same time we stand up for human rights, we stand up for the Canadians who are being arbitrary detained in China right now".

Saskatchewan's premier says Ottawa needs to treat Chinese imports with the same scrutiny China is showing Canada's canola shipments. "This has clearly failed", Scheer said, adding that he would not allow China to leverage "hard earned" tax dollars "at a time when it is blocking our product and detaining our citizens". He said he is not advocating for tariffs on Chinese products, and said canola is now faced with "unfair scrutiny", which could be reciprocal.
