After going through lots of software announcements, including tvOS, watchOS, iOS 13, and iPadOS, Apple kicked off its Mac section of WWDC 2019 on Monday with the introduction of the Mac desktop we've been waiting for, the brand new, powerful, upgradeable, Mac Pro.

Finally, if you need portability, this baby comes on wheels, so you can move it around the house easily.

However, if you have the money to spare and the new Mac Pro sounds like your cup of tea, you'll be able to snag one sometime this fall. 6K is all well and good, but it's HDR where Apple's efforts push new ground.

And even if the holes don't freak you out, the new Mac Pro just looks kind of off. In addition to the fancy MPX module for GPUs, there are eight PCI Express slots on the motherboard, including four to accommodate double-slot cards. Apple's professional-oriented machine has not seen any major redesigns, upgrades, or reworks since 2013's Mac Pro hit the market, making it all the more important for Apple to get this model right.

AMD graphics is available as standard in the form of the Radeon Pro 580X with the Radeon Pro Vega II further up the chain - you can specify two of these should you wish for 56 teraflops of graphics power. Apple is pitching the Mac Pro as a tool for professional media creation and editing, and it's rounded up partners like Red, Avid, Adobe, Blackmagic, Autodesk, Unity, and Unreal to optimize their software. That includes an 8-core Xeon, 32GB of RAM, a single Radeon Pro 580X GPU, and a 256GB SSD.

To enhance video processing - a major boon to video pros - Apple is also adding the option of a custom hardware accelerator called Afterburner. Abandoning the smooth cylinder look of its maligned predecessor, the new Mac Pro looks more like a typical tower full of slots giving users the flexibility they need to fill the machine with up-to-date components as tech improves.

Connectivity includes Thunderbolt 3, USB Type-A, dual 10Gigabit Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 5. Powering the whole thing is a 1.4kW power supply. "With Retina 6K resolution, gorgeous color, extreme brightness and contrast ratio, and a highly functional design, Pro Display XDR delivers the most comprehensive set of features ever offered on any display at this price point".

The system is, says Apple, as quiet as an iMac Pro. The Apple Pro Display XDR has a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports on the back and up to six displays can be hooked up to a single Mac Pro at once.

If you buy the monitor, be prepared to spend extra to mount it.
