Raymundo Beltran Loses To Richard Commey For All Of Us Posted by Jason Langendorf on Jun 29 2019 19:42

IBF rules had stipulated that regardless of Friday's result, Commey would remain its champion.

"That was a great performance by Commey, who showed why he is a great champion".

IBF lightweight world champion Richard Commey (29-2, 26 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over former WBO lightweight world champion Ray Beltran (36-9-1, 22 KOs) on Friday night before 2,795 at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California. The preliminary card will stream live on ESPN+ starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The pair were supposed to fight for Commey's 135-pound title but that was scuttled after Beltran couldn't make the weight at Thursday's weigh-in.

A deal was struck between Lou DiBella and Bob Arum, who promotes Beltran, ensuring Beltran would not rehydrate more than 10 pounds from the weigh-in, or 146.8 pounds. Beltran last fought on February 10, knocking out junior welterweight Hiroki Okada of Japan.

Sevu Reece ran in two tries as the Crusaders held off the Hurricanes to book their place in the Super Rugby final with a 30-26 win.

Commey knocked Beltran down twice in the opening round and it looked set to be over quickly before the latter steadied. Commey swung momentum his way in round four, connecting with several punches to the head. Commey-Beltran airs tonight on ESPN at 10 p.m. ET. Beltran was not visibly hurt, but his punch output began to drop with each round.

Commey caught Beltran with a left hook early in the eighth round and it was over for the American. Beltran was disappointed with the stoppage, as he thought he could have continued.

The 38-year-old fighter will also be fined 20 percent of his purse, which in this case means Beltran must shell out $40,000, with half going to Commey (28-2, 25 KO) and the other half going to the CSAC. I was happy to get the job done and defend my title for the first time. Beltran rose to his feet, but the referee waved the fight off.

Commey, would now await the victor of the July 19 fight between Teofimo Lopez and Masayoshi Nakatani, which is an IBF eliminator, or the victor of the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs Luke Campbell fight on August 31. "Teofimo Lopez has a job to do against Nakatani on July 19, and if he takes care of business, Teofimo will challenge Commey for the title in what will be a tremendous fight", Arum said. "That would be a great fight". "I listened to my coach, Robert Garcia", Adames said. "Now I am going to get together with my team and figure out what's next".
