Audi recalls e-tron to address battery leak, fire risk

Volkswagen AG's luxury brand Audi is recalling its first all-electric vehicle sold in the US due to a potential risk of a battery fire. The model's launch is just getting under way, so of course Audi wants to avoid anything that could potentially become spectacularly bad news like, say, a raging vehicle fire.

Dahnke said no customers in the USA have reported the fault indicator light activating or any incident with the grommet failing, but that approximately five e-trons in Europe - where the vehicle has been on sale since December - have experienced activated indicator lights, though no resulting fires or injuries were reported. If an e-tron is not available, Audi will provide a vehicle with an internal-combustion engine and an $800 cash card for higher fuel costs and other expenses incurred. Not all vehicles delivered to customers so far areaffected, the Audi representative said. If the electrical regenerative braking system fails, drivers could experience an increased delay in deceleration after pressing on the brakes, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Audi and Jaguar are recalling their electric SUVs due to potential safety issues.

Even Tesla itself has suffered a spate of unexplained spontaneous fires in some of its cars recently. "Audi e-tron vehicles unaffected by the recall remain available for delivery and our reservation system remains open to receive customer reservations". A total of 1,644 E-Trons have been shipped to the US, and the remainder will be fixed before being handed to customers. It is unclear if the campaign will delay further deliveries, as the fix is not expected to become available until August. No incidents have been reported globally yet, but Audi is taking precautions to make sure that the problem is fixed.
