Technical Director Klaus Froelich stated that diesel engines will be in production for at least 20 years and the petrol engine of at least 30 years.

Despite the fact that BMW is striving to become one of the world leaders in the field of electrification, the Bavarian brand will continue to invest heavily in internal combustion engines for many years. If true, people can probably stop freaking out about diesel resale value, or ICE resale value in general. However, while BMW is prepping new electric and hybrid vehicles, the company has made a decision to take a much more measured approach instead of electrifying ever new model and building dedicated EVs. He said electric cars are more expensive to produce, and that will only get worse before it gets better as more automakers scramble to fight for raw materials. There are areas in Russian Federation without recharging infrastructure, along with places in the Middle East and parts of internal China. He said Europe and the USA likely will be more receptive to plug-in hybrids, while China goes all-in on electric cars, mostly due to government regulations.

What may actually say more though, in the language of corporate nuance, is that few companies have gone so far as to solidly declare that the end is nigh for internal combustion engines.

The units that will endure will be four and six-cylinder diesels, but they will have three turbos at most.

As for gasoline engines, it would appear that the V12 will go the way of the dinosaurs.
