Kadeisha Buchanan's victor for Canada was her first goal at the Women's World Cup in what was her sixth appearance in the competition.

But what did we learn from the match?

5 - Canada enters the competition ranked fifth in the world, the team's highest ever ranking going into a Women's World Cup.

There were danger signs from Canada early with a pair of corners and a free kick that Sinclair got a head to but not on target.

Playing on the left of midfield, Beckie was wonderful, causing Cameroon serious problems with her creativity. Pretty much every positive move Canada had come through the 24-year-old.

And naturally, it was Beckie who set up the opening goal for Canada. "We take out defence very seriously", said Buchanan.

181 - Christine Sinclair is four goals away from Abby Wambach's all-time worldwide record of 184.

Sinclair sits at 181 goals, trailing only former US forward Abby Wambach, who had 184 goals in global competition to set the record among men and women. A header and shot went wide before she came close in a goalmouth melee, only to have the ball bounce away in a mass of bodies.

Captain Christine Sinclair also saw the bigger picture.

With the Netherlands Canada's final group opponents on 20 June, that back line will be really tested against the best and it may become clear whether their run to a quarter-final on home soil in 2015 was just a team surfing on home momentum. The 23-year-old Buchanan is the defender beginning to muscle apart Wendie Renard and Mbock Bathy's Lyon centre-back partnership.

Beckie - looking to net her 26 senior worldwide goal - curled straight at Annette Ngo Ndom just after the restart, while Claudine Meffometou Tcheno spurned Cameroon's best chance to level with 20 minutes remaining, unfortunate to head just the wrong side of the post.
