The alleged mastermind behind the shooting of retired Red Sox slugger David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic has been arrested, according to a report.

The Dominican National Police announced the news in Spanish on Twitter on Friday.

Ortiz was on a crowded bar patio in Santo Domingo the night of June 9 when a gunman walked in, pulled out a Browning Hi-Power 9mm and shot him once in the lower back.

Authorities had said last week that they believed Gomez was living in the USA and described him as a unsafe fugitive, adding that he was an associate of Mexico's Gulf Cartel.

Dominican Republic officials suspected Gomez Vasquez was the mastermind behind the plot back on June 19. Police said that Gomez had meant to target his cousin, Sixto David Fernandez, and said that Ortiz was the victim of mistaken identity.

Actress Kangana Ranaut charged Aditya Pancholi in a rape case
She claimed to have approached the police when the incident took place, but he was let go with just a warning. In 2017, the female actor had gone public saying Pancholi had harassed her physically and mentally.

Carlos Rubio, Gomez's attorney, did not immediately return a message for comment.

"I want to clarify that I have nothing to do with any attempt on the life against Sixto David Fernandez, " he said. He also was being pursued by USA authorities for his alleged involvement in a drug trafficking ring, per the report.

Last week Dominican officials said they had no record of Gomez having returned to the Dominican Republic. Doctors had to remove Ortiz's gallbladder and part of his intestine.

Ortiz was since released from intensive care and was listed in good condition, his wife Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement over the weekend.
