Donegal Motor Club and Motorsport Ireland have named the man killed during today's Donegal International Rally as Manus Kelly, a three-time victor of the competition.

'It was obvious throughout his recent election campaign that he was passionate and entirely committed to serving the people of the Letterkenny electoral area which he cherished.

Gardaí confirmed that there was a collision, which is understood to have happened during the Fanad Head loop during stage 15.

The Donegal International Rally is a three-day international event attracts the sport's big names and up to 70,000 spectators every year.

"He was an active fundraiser and advocate for the Letterkenny University Hospital".

An investigation is under way and "will be assisted by Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club".

The Donegal Rally takes place over three days each June.
