Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to face leadership vote

Today a vote of Facebook shareholders will take place regarding whether Mark Zuckerberg should step down from his role as Facebook's chairman, reports the BBC.

Protestors armed with an angry face emoji attended Facebook's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday.

Outside the meeting, protesters convened to voice their concerns about Mr Zuckerberg's power, while the Fight for the Future advocacy group projected a "Fire Mark Zuckerberg" display.

During the meeting's Q&A period, one questioner asked Facebook's lead independent director, Susan Desmond-Hellmann, if she was willing to exercise her authority to call a board meeting without Zuckerberg in order to oust the CEO.

"Zuckerberg has said that he wants to protect people from white supremacy but there's still a ton of white supremacists organizing on Facebook", said Leila Deen, program director for SumOfUs, the group in the coalition responsible for the balloon.

But going over these initiatives were mostly a symbolic gesture as Facebook's board, once again, easily voted down all shareholder proposals.

It declined to comment on the petition, with a spokesman saying it did not preview votes or comment on specific companies.

According to the Reuters news agency, some shareholders at the AGM said Facebook was a "hostile work environment" for people with conservative views.

Donald Trump to end preferential trade treatment for India on June 5
According to the US Trade Representative's Office, the US goods and services trade deficit with India was $27.3 billion in 2017. The US official reiterated that India needs to address America's major concerns related to market access and data localisation.

"These include critiques of the company's likely role in proliferating fake news that affected the 2016 U.S. election, stories that, quote, laid bare Facebook's lax policies around the use and sharing of user information, and risked losing users' trust in the platform and multiple allegations that the company's communications app WhatsApp and even the Facebook platform itself facilitated the spread of hate in places such as Myannmar (Burma) and India, which led to violence and aided in genocide".

"I do acknowledge there are limits to what an individual company should deciding", he said.

The comments raise the specter of harsher action in Congress against Facebook.

Investors do not seem anxious.

He wrote only that, as his portfolio's second-largest holding, Facebook "appeals to us based on growth in its various apps and revenue from advertisers that want to reach the firm's enormous base of daily active users".

Mr Zuckerberg is very unlikely to lose the vote, because he has 60% of the voting power.

Mark Zuckerberg will remain as chairman of Facebook after an attempt to strip him of the position put forward by a group of shareholders was rejected.
