Iran media: US cyberattack failed to take down missile systems

Besides the whole Stuxnet thing and earlier trade sanctions, Japanese and Norwegian oil tankers were blown up near Iran this month, a USA military spy drone was shot down by the Iranians, and today President Donald Trump approved fresh "hard-hitting" sanctions against the Mid-East nation. The cyberattack targeted computer systems that control the corps' rocket and missile launchers, administration officials said.

Saudi Arabia and the USA accused Iran of being behind attacks on tankers near the Persian Gulf in recent weeks, while the UAE has been urging diplomacy to avert a wider conflict.

In the days since Iran downed an American drone and threatened to destroy an American plane carrying at least 35 people on board, the Trump administration has increased sanctions on Iran and conducted a series of cyber attacks that Tehran claims ended in failure.

"We welcome diffusion of tensions in the region".

Iran says the United States drone violated its airspace, a charge that Washington denies.

Trump says the sanctions were needed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and made it clear that economic pressure would be maintained unless Tehran changed course.

Tensions with Iran have been escalating since Trump announced his intention to pull out of the 2015 multinational nuclear agreement with Iran, and have dramatically ramped after the Iranians shot down a US drone this week. In May, the Trump administration prohibited the purchase of Iranian iron, steel, aluminum and copper.

Pompeo's visit to Saudi Arabia came one day after Houthi rebels allied with Iran fired a drone attack from Yemen on the Saudi airport in Abha.

Bolton said Iran should never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, and standing alongside him Netanyahu slammed the 2015 pact, which was signed by several world powers.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo added: "When the Iranian regime decides to forgo violence and meet our diplomacy with diplomacy, it knows how to reach us".

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the USA, in a joint statement published on Saudi state media on Sunday, voiced alarm over escalating regional tensions and the "dangers posed by Iranian destabilising activity".

The Houthis also carried out a drone strike on a key Saudi oil pipeline earlier this month.

"We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran until the regime abandons its risky activities and its aspirations", he said.

Leading a signature policy of "maximum pressure", the USA quit a United Nations-ratified nuclear agreement between Iran and six world states.

US especial envoy to Iran Brian Hook touched on the matter during a recent interview.

Officials have detected a rise in "malicious cyber activity" directed at the United States by people tied to the Iranian government, Chris Krebs, director of the Department of Homeland Security's cybersecurity agency, said on Saturday on Twitter. The U.S. has blamed the attacks on Tehran, which has denied any wrongdoing.

Bolton's tough message seemed to be aimed not only at Tehran, but also at reassuring key US allies that the White House remains committed to maintaining pressure on Iran.

The online operation was first reported Friday by Yahoo News.

The senior U.S. official told reporters en route to Abu Dhabi that Pompeo and the U.S. Navy is building a "Sentinel" program for "proactive deterrence". "It's about shooting pictures of Iranians", the official said.

He said: "We want to be proportionate".

Russian Federation is a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal and criticised Mr Trump's 2018 decision to withdraw.

Iran's naval commander, Rear Adm. Hossein Khanzadi, declared that Tehran is capable of shooting down other American spy drones that violate its airspace, saying "the crushing response can always be repeated". Oil prices have surged as much as 10% amid rising tensions this week, and the White House said Trump and the prince discussed "Saudi Arabia's critical role in ensuring stability in the Middle East and in the global oil market".

"He wants to negotiate with Iran".

The landmark 2015 accord sought to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.
