New Zealand coast to opening Cricket World Cup win over Sri Lanka

Chasing a paltry target, the Kiwis completed the run-chase in 16.1 overs.

Sri Lanka, who have lost nine of their last 10 one-day global series and been plagued by internal problems, batted for only 29.2 overs in making 136 - their third-lowest World Cup score.

But it was Henry's spell of seven straight overs that opened the gates for New Zealand's domination against the 1996 champions.

Paceman Tim Southee missed out due to a calf injury as the Kiwis - runners-up in the 2015 edition - went in with two all-rounders in their starting line-up.

With the Black Caps seamers getting some swing and seam movement, Sri Lanka rode their luck early on, as outside edges flew through gully, while Dimuth Karunaratne inside edged the ball on to his stumps, only for fielders to watch on in bemusement as the bails didn't move.

Henry struck with the second delivery of the game to send Lahiru Thirimanne trudging back to the pavilion after the left-handed opener had hit a boundary from the first ball.

The resulting 42-run partnership proved to be a false dawn, as Henry removed Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis with back-to-back deliveries, sparking a collapse from 46-1 to 60-6 as all the Black Caps bowlers chipped in.

Chiefs stun Crusaders with epic comeback in Fiji
Cape Town - The Chiefs staged a remarkable comeback to beat the Crusaders in their Super Rugby encounter in Suva, Fiji on Saturday.

Although they got into a decent position at 46/1, they threw it all away to slump to 60/5, as New Zealand's Matt Henry terrorised the Sri Lankan batting order, picking up 3 for 29.

Martin Guptill finished the match unbeaten on 73 off 51 balls.

The only one still believing was their captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, whose unbeaten 52 made him only the second in men's World Cup history to carry his bat.

Dhananjaya de Silva played the hat-trick ball with a glorious off drive, but soon fell to the pace of Ferguson after being trapped lbw.

When Jeevan Mendis became Ferguson's second victim to a sharp Jimmy Neesham catch, Sri Lanka had lost five wickets for 14 runs in 44 balls and were in total disarray.

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson joined the party with two wickets in his first three overs, while Colin de Grandhomme claimed the prized wicket of the experienced Angelo Mathews for a duck.

# This was the fifth loss in as many ODIs for Sri Lanka playing in Cardiff, Wales.
