Newcastle United joined by Liverpool and Manchester United in cup competition

'A young Newcastle United side will again be among the 16 Category One academy teams competing in next season's EFL Trophy.

Manchester United are set to participate in next season's EFL Trophy for the first time in their history.

The pair join youth teams from Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal in next year's competition - meaning the Premier League's top six teams last campaign will be represented.

Previously, the Reds had never competed for the competition, which is played out between lower-league clubs with the recent addition of elite Academy sides.
