Iran alleges that the drone violated its airspace, which the USA denies.

Iran says the U.S. drone violated its airspace, a charge that Washington denies.

Pompeo while leaving U.S. called Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates "two great allies in the challenge that Iran presents".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed Iran and maritime security with rich Gulf Arab allies during a trip to the region on Monday after President Donald Trump called off a military strike to retaliate for Tehran's downing of a US drone. The top USA diplomat was due to fly later Monday to the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. secretary of state says he will be talking to officials in the Persian Gulf as well as Asia and Europe as he sets out to build an worldwide coalition against Iran.

On Monday, Iranian officials released statements seeking de-escalation, while warning of further actions if necessary.

USA officials said they did not know if Pompeo raised the issue with Prince Mohammed.

The crisis gripping the Middle East stems from Trump's withdrawal of the USA a year ago from the nuclear deal with Iran and other world powers and then imposing crippling new sanctions on Tehran.

Mohammad Javad Zarif also said Trump and those around him pushing a hard line on Iran "despise diplomacy", in his first post on Twitter after he himself was targeted in a new batch of U.S. sanctions.

The US pointman on Iran, Brian Hook, on Monday held his own talks in Oman, which has often served as a go-between for Washington and Tehran.

Before boarding his flight to Saudi Arabia, Pompeo described the sanctions as a way to deny Iran "the resources to foment terror, to build out their nuclear weapon system, to build out their missile program".

Iran also said on June 17 that it would breach internationally agreed curbs on its stock of low-enriched uranium in 10 days, but that European nations could still save a nuclear deal that sets those limits.

"Iran must understand that these attacks are unacceptable", Mr Cohen said.

Secretary Pompeo said in a tweet. Drones were also used to attack a Saudi oil pipeline last month. The Houthis say the attacks targeting the kingdom are a response to relentless Saudi airstrikes on Yemen that have killed thousands.

Earlier, Pompeo vowed to increase economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran until Tehran chooses diplomacy over "violence", hinting that the Islamic republic "knows how to reach us".

Speaking as he left Washington for the Arabian Gulf, Mr Pompeo said he would talk with representatives in Jeddah and Abu Dhabi about how to "make sure that we are all strategically aligned". In response, Trump ordered, then canceled a strike meant to hit a set of radar and missile battery sites in Iran after he was informed that up to 150 people could be killed by the strike.

Trump last week ordered but then cancelled a military strike on Iran, saying the response would not be proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.

Trump, however, has also said that he appreciated Iran's decision to not shoot down a manned US spy plane carrying 30 people in the same area as the drone.

Ravanchi spoke as the U.N. Security Council met behind closed doors over Iran at the request of the United States.

USA military cyber forces on Thursday launched a strike against Iranian military computer systems, according to US officials.

Trump has said he was ready to reach out to Iran if the country agreed to renounce nuclear weapons.
