A rocket has landed in the compound housing the headquarters of several global oil companies, including United States giant ExxonMobil, in Iraq's southern city of Basra, wounding two local workers, police said. The company returned some of its workers on May 31 after boosting security at the site.

Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford, reporting from Basra, said a local security official confirmed Exxon evacuated some 20 foreign staff immediately.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to brief the press. Another 24 workers were later evacuated.

Abdul-Mahdi also said that Exxon Mobil had begun returning to Iraq.

The short-range missile attack focused on a complex used by several major oil companies, including US -based ExxonMobil.

Last Thursday, two explosions occurred on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

A rocket attack has injured two workers at a compound housing worldwide oil companies.

Oil ministry spokesman Assem Jihad told AFP that those wounded were all Iraqis.

Oil officials said operations including exports from southern Iraq were not affected by the incidents.

The firm had already withdrawn 83 non-Iraqi employees from a nearby oil field in mid-May after Washington pulled non-essential staff from its Baghdad embassy, citing threats from Iranian-linked armed groups.

Attacks on energy facilities, including a Saudi Arabian pipeline and several oil tankers, as well as a USA military buildup are stoking fears that the Middle East may be heading toward another conflict.

The company's staffers have since returned.

Mosul Mayor Zuhair Araji said the Nineveh Operations Command on the eastern bank of the city came under attack by short-range rockets hours before the Kurdish oilfield attack.

Three rockets hit another base hosting United States troops north of the capital, Baghdad, on Monday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

On Friday evening, "three mortar rounds hit the Balad airbase (north of Baghdad), starting a fire", the same source said.
