It has also blocked imports of Canadian canola seed and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he fears further retaliation.

U.S. President Donald Trump, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto sign documents during the USMCA signing ceremony before the G20 leaders summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina November 30, 2018.

Canadian consular officials are also continuing to provide support for former Calgarian Michael Spavor, who has also been detained in China since December.

The disclosure comes amid growing domestic calls for Trudeau to step up pressure on China to release the two Canadians, whom his government has said were arbitrarily detained.

The two Canadian men were detained last December after a senior executive with Chinese telecom giant Huawei was arrested in Vancouver on Dec. 1 at the request of USA authorities.

Dr Protopopov said the head could have been severed by the ice but "we do not exclude that it could have been cut artificially". Scientists are now building a digital model of the brain and the skull's interior for further study, Protopopov said.

Trudeau said last week he would look at whether it was "appropriate or desirable" to seek a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit in Japan later this month.

While Trudeau and Trump have crossed paths at various global events in the last year, and had several telephone conversations, this will be their first substantive meeting since the US president insulted the prime minister a little over a year ago after departing the G7 in Quebec.

Trudeau's team said the two leaders will discuss the ratification of the new North American free trade deal and China's detention of two Canadian citizens.

Tensions eased last month after the United States lifted tariffs it had imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum exports in 2018, citing national security grounds. MPs are set to adjourn for the summer on June 21 and pending a push to ratify NAFTA that would force a recall of Parliament.

Some Democrats in the House of Representatives are less enthusiastic about the new deal, and some would like to deny Trump a trade victory. A day earlier, Freeland discussed trade with US trade czar Robert Lighthizer and China with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
