Trump UN Envoy Pick Kelly Craft Says Climate Change A Threat To Planet

President Donald Trump's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations faced tough questions during her Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday on the worldwide body, climate change, her top priorities and limited of diplomatic experience.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft is grilled by U.S. Senate committee about why she became absent from her submit for higher than 300 days all the plot via her 19-month tenure.

Trump's first ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, left at the end of a year ago as her star power grows rapidly within the Republican Party.

Trump's original pick for United Nations ambassador was Heather Nauert, a spokesperson for the State Department.

Craft, a longtime Republican donor who is married to billionaire coal executive Joe Craft, is serving as ambassador to Canada. Craft was candid about her lack of experience on Wednesday, telling the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that she would approach the role with "clear-eyed humility".

Craft has been credited by supporters with playing a major role in her current role in helping to secure a proposed new trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico but has been criticized for frequent absences from Ottawa.

Craft urged the committee that every view to be one of her stagger back and forth used to be authorized in advance and complied with authorities policies. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said that in the end, Craft actually saved taxpayers money because of that.

Craft's response did not satisfy some on the committee. Democrats were also concerned about possible conflicts of interest as she holds extensive investments in fossil fuels. They've also given extensively to their home-state Sen.

"With Kelly Craft's nomination, we have been sent a nominee who will personally profit from the continued burning of fossil fuels and who infamously proclaimed that there are "good scientists on both sides" of the climate debate", Merkley said.

"I find this staggering amount of time away from her post very troubling and an abdication of leadership", he said.

"The bottom line is without the fleshy file, we won't be mindful", he said.

But as senators raised the question again and again, Craft hedged on the degree to which fossil fuels drive climate change, which the United Nations described in November as an "existential crisis".

During Tuesday's hearing, Craft also addressed her position on climate change.

But Craft defended withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, saying America should not take on an "outsize burden" that "imperils" jobs or economic growth. She said the U.S.is already leading on the issue, citing a 14% reduction in carbon emissions between 2005 and 2017.

In addition to climate change and travel, Craft also faced Democratic questions about her relative lack of diplomatic experience, which her Republican supporters said was belied by her almost two years as serving as the top envoy to a close ally and neighbor.

"I will give you my commitment that where coal is part of the conversation within climate change at the United Nations, I will recuse myself", she told Democratic Senator Ed Markey, a leading environmentalist.
