Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who loss their lives, and those recovering in the hospital.

DeWayne Craddock, the man suspected of shooting 12 people at the office (including 11 of his former colleagues), sent an email on Friday announcing that he meant to quit his job, according to The New York Times.

Craddock reportedly walked into the city building and killed a dozen people. He was killed after a fierce gun battle with four police officers. At least three of the people wounded were still hospitalized on June 1.

At least 12 people were killed and six others were injured as a longtime municipal employee opened fire inside a public works building in the U.S. city of Virginia Beach on Friday. Majority were from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has 40 agents there to manage evidence collection.

Two detectives were the first to enter the building, followed by a pair of uniformed K-9 officers who also got there fast.

Police said Craddock, 40, had been employed as an engineer with the city's public utilities department for 15 years. "Why did this happen?" "We do not have anything glaring", Cervera said.

Friday's massacre is the deadliest in the United States this year and adds the city to a grim list of places impacted by a deadly mass shooting.

"They leave a void that we will never be able to fill", said city manager Dave Hansen.

Hundreds more residents gathered by the iconic Neptune sculpture on Virginia Beach's sandy coast for an evangelical service hosted by Trinity Church.

The other employees who were killed were Tara Welch Gallagher, Alexander Mikhail Gusev, Katherine A Nixon, Ryan Keith Cox, Joshua O Hardy and Michelle "Missy" Langer, all of Virginia Beach; Laquita C Brown and Robert "Bobby" Williams, both of Chesapeake; and Richard H Nettleton of Norfolk.

The 12th victim, Herbert "Bert" Snelling of Virginia Beach, was a contractor who was in the building to seek a permit.

He was described as a "disgruntled employee" and a "loner ex-National Guardsmen" who around 4pm that same day opened fire outside and on three floors inside the same building.

"Today we all grieve", Mr Hansen said. That area is not accessible to non-employees.

What we know about the Virginia Beach gunman
At one point, the suspect fired at officers through a door and a wall and hit one officer, who was saved by a bulletproof vest. The shooter's parents, reached Friday night, told CNN they weren't aware of any trouble that he was having with his employer.

Craddock used two.45-calibre handguns in the shooting and police found a sound suppressor, commonly known as a silencer, and extended magazines.

All indications were that the shooter purchased the weapons legally, one in 2016 and one in 2018, Benedict said.

Cervera said the first officers on scene arrived within 2 minutes. Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer said Snelling was a friend. He and Hansen declined to answer questions Saturday about whether the gunman had threatened anyone in the building previously or faced discipline at work.

Joseph Scott, who said he worked with the shooter for several years, saw him in a bathroom at work Friday.

"He was at the sink, brushing his teeth like he always did", Scott told CNN.

"I said, 'How are you doing?' He said he was doing OK", Scott recalled. "I asked, 'Any plans for the weekend?' And he said, 'No.' I said, 'Well, have a good day.' And he said the same to me".

"And it was no more than that".

Scott said the gunman was "what I thought was a good person", and described him as generally quiet.

"Put yourself in that position, you just took numerous rounds, one of your fellow officers was just injured, was shot, you find the individual and then you immediately switch over to "I'm going to try and save his life" because our police officers truly believe in the sanctity of life", Cervera said.

Police confirm that the suspected shooter, an employee at the center, had resigned and he gave his two week notice Friday morning.

Twelve people were tragically killed in Friday's shooting.

A 2003 report in Dolan's Virginia Business Observer said Craddock had joined a consulting firm called MSA and was a project engineer.
