Arsenal's summer transfer business has been a bit slow than usual but it looks like the North London club will try to get most of its transfer targets since they have now appointed Edu Gaspar as their technical director.

Last season's Europa League runners-up had been looking for a new director since the departure of Sven Mislintat in February and have turned ex-Brazil worldwide Edu, who played for the Gunners from 2001 to 2005.

He will link up with Emery and his players later this week when they travel to the United States to begin their pre-season tour after leaving a similar role with the Brazil national side following their Copa America success.

"Arsenal has always had a special place in my heart and I'm thrilled to be returning to this great club", he said.

Talks over the deal progressed significantly over the weekend - with both clubs now thrashing out the final details of the transfer, which will be Arsenal's second of the summer window following the arrival of Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli.

Therefore, they will need to spend this summer in order to try and force their way back into Europe's Premier cup competition.

"We have a strong squad and some very talented young players with fantastic people at every level".

Mariner believes it is a move in the right direction for Arsenal as they aim to return to the Champions League after a three-year absence.

Arsenal are looking for reinforcements ahead of the next season, especially in the defense, since underwhelming performances last season has propelled Arsenal to make transformations.

Arsenal's measly £45 million transfer budget has been the source of considerable frustration amongst Gunners fans this year.

Edu spent five seasons with the north London club from 2001 and also had two spells with Corinthians and also played for Valencia under Unai Emery.
