At least 17 people have been killed across Nepal after torrential monsoon rains induced floods and landslides, officials said on Friday (July 12).

A Home Ministry statement said 15 people had been killed, while six others were missing and 13 were injured as incessant rains caused landslides and triggered flash floods in rivers originating in the Himalayas.

The centre said nine key highways remained blocked by floods and mudslides, and attempts were under way to open them up for traffic.

Other roads were being cleared by thousands of police and soldiers.

Workers were also repairing fallen communication towers to restore phone lines.

More than 1100 people have been rescued in several parts of the country in the last three days, Thapa added. More than 10,000 are estimated to have been displaced.

Nepal's weather department warned on Thursday that heavy rains were expected to continue for two days, and advised people to stay alert.

Last year, more than 1,200 people were been killed across South Asia in monsoon storms with India's Kerala suffering its worst floods in almost 100 years.

The annual monsoon rains, which normally start in June and continue through September often result in casualties in Nepal, a country of 30 million people.

In India at least 11 people have died in the country's northeast, officials said, with some 20,000 being housed in relief camps in badly-hit Assam state.

The dead included two schoolchildren who were buried when their boarding school collapsed while they were asleep in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh state.

Monsoon floods have inundated 21 districts in Assam, affecting thousands, officials said Friday.

Elsewhere in Assam, Kaziranga National Park, home to the endangered one-horn rhinoceros, has been flooded. In Mizoram, floods have submerged about 400 homes in the small town of Tlabung, police said.
