Ithaca fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the 300 Block of W. king Rd at Upper Buttermilk State Park for the drowning on Sunday. The school announced his death on Monday.

Anyichie was set to enter his sophomore year at Binghamton and was a three-year varsity player at St. Mary.

Binghamton coach Tommy Dempsey tweeted that the program was "devastated" by the news. "We all loved Calistus so much".

A rope system was used to get the patient up and out of the ravine and he was then carried out of the gorge to Bangs Ambulance paramedics.

"A talented young person has been tragically taken from us", said President Harvey Stenger.

Students and faculty at Binghamton University community are mourning the sudden loss of a student-athlete.

Anyichie was a forward on the Bearcats basketball team.

Added Binghamton athletic director Patrick Elliott: "Calistus was a bright and engaging young man with an infectious smile".

The man, who was identified as Calistus Anyichie, was pulled to shore by friends and strangers, park police said. He loved his academic studies at Binghamton and embodied the exceptional spirit of being a student-athlete at our University. "Our honest condolences go out to his family, teammates and fellow student-athletes".

The 6-foot-9 Anyichie appeared in 32 games as a freshman last season, averaging 1.9 point and 2.1 rebounds.
