Gibraltar extends detention of Iranian tanker for a month

On the same day, a British warship prevented three Iranian navy vessels from obstructing the course of a British tanker exiting the Persian gulf.

The corps made the announcement on Friday through Iran's state-run broadcaster.

"The IRGC seized the tanker at the request of the maritime authorities in the Iranian province of Hormozgan for "not following worldwide maritime regulations", state television cited an IRGC statement as saying".

Iran has vowed to respond to what it calls Britain's "piracy" over the seizure of the tanker.

The political editor of the Sunday Times said on Twitter that a meeting of the government's emergency committee was taking place to investigate what had happened.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said over the weekend that Britain would "facilitate the release" of the tanker if Tehran provided guarantees that the vessel would not travel on to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions.

Earlier this month, the government of Gibraltar said that its law enforcement agencies, with support from the UK Royal Marines, detained an Iranian supertanker carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil.

So far the British government has only said that it is "assessing the situation following reports of an incident in the Gulf".

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, on Thursday morning met with the Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and separately with Boris Johnson, the two contenders to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK. He added that his country was working closely with its worldwide partners.

President Donald Trump on Thursday said an American warship, the USS Boxer, took defensive action after an Iranian drone came within 1,000 yards of the warship and ignored multiple calls to stand down. The British firm operating the ship said the vessel and its crew have been released.
