House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Md. left arrives for a House Democratic caucus meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington Wednesday
House Democrats on Thursday passed legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by October 2025, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring it up in his chamber, sending the fight to the campaign trail.
Four years ago, @KeithEllison and I rallied with low wage workers for an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
The Congressional Budget Office said in a report earlier this month that an increase to $15 would provide a financial boost to almost 30 million workers and raise more than a million out of poverty, but it also would result in 1.3 million jobs lost by 2025.
"If Senator McConnell wants to vote against that bill and explain to the people of Kentucky why he believes a $7.25 minimum wage is acceptable to him that is his prerogative", Sanders reiterated in his statement on Thursday. "That's why the Raise the Wage Act has our full support". But since then, some cities and states have raised their local minimum wages to $15 an hour on their own - including Seattle, San Francisco, New York City and then all of California and New York State. The legislation, for the first time, would pay tipped workers the same as others earning the minimum, boosting their pay to $15 an hour, too. 'W've now had the longest period without a minimum wage increase, ' he said.

Two close US allies are condemning President Donald Trump's incendiary weekend tweets about four Democratic congresswomen. All four congresswomen who are believed to be the targets of his thread are left wing Democrats that are non-Caucasian.
For retail workers like Cyndi Murray, a 19-year Walmart worker who is also a leader with labor group United For Respect, this is a big step forward in making companies, who pay below $15 an hour, pay higher wages. There are more people looking for work than there are jobs available. "Many corporations have come out in favor, or at least they're not opposing the minimum wage because the minimum wage has been shown to stimulate the economy so much that the corporations will do well", Scott said. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said in November he doesn't think minimum wages are a good idea at all, raising doubts that President Donald Trump would sign it.
"Today", said Sanders, "I am proud to say that a $15 minimum wage has gone from laughable to inevitable".
In order to address some of those concerns, moderate Democratic lawmakers introduced an amendment to the bill that would require the Government Accountability Office to to study the impact on job creation after the first two wage increases.
Opponents also insist raising the federal wage ignores cost-of-living differences around the country, and would hurt states with lower living costs. This would depress the economy at a time of economic boom, ' he said. "Let the Senate vote". "But you first have to agree that you want an increase".
