TWELVE Israeli teenagers accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old British woman in Cyprus have appeared in court.

KAN reports that the suspects shouted that they were being abused and beaten by police when they saw their parents for the first time outside the courthouse.

Medical examiners said they found bruises and scratches on the 19-year-old woman's her body. The court hearing, which was held behind closed doors because some of the alleged rapists are minors, was to determine whether they can be held in custody for an additional week while officers examine DNA evidence they have provided.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said it was aware of the case, and that Cypriot law enforcement had allowed Israeli diplomats access to the suspects.

The young men covered their faces with their t-shirts as they arrived handcuffed at the court in the nearby town of Paralimni, in the southeast of Cyprus.

"The police hit us, they broke our noses, and the girl is lying", the Israeli suspects told the outlet through a lawyer.

In a related incident, British male guests who were staying at the same hotel as the suspects and the alleged victim, reportedly attacked a group of Israeli men after news had spread of a gang rape in one of the rooms.

The alleged attack was said to have taken place in a hotel in the popular holiday resort of Ayia Napa.

Mr Yaslovitzh said he suspected police investigators were trying to set a trap by implicating all 12 suspects. She said the boy called her "in tears" and said, "I didn't do anything".

Mr Yaslovitzh told Israeli TV Channel 12 two of the suspects admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the woman, and it was consensual. "They want to know how my clients will (react)".

Ayia Napa, located on the eastern side of the Mediterranean island, is popular among young tourists for its beaches and nightlife.
