Labour would back Remain in referendum on Tory Brexit

It comes after the leaders of the UK's five largest Labour-affiliated unions announced they would back a second referendum, after they met with Jeremy Corbyn.

But how did we get here?

Labour peer and TNE columnist Andrew Adonis tweeted: "Jeremy's letter is unsatisfactory as it doesn't rule out Labour seeking to negotiate a fantasy "better Brexit" after a general election".

It was a rocky road on the way to Mr Corbyn's announcement on Tuesday.

But the party's poor showing in recent local and European elections suggests Labour is losing support to parties including the Liberal Democrats and the Greens that advocate remaining in the EU.

Unlike Johnson, Hunt said he would be prepared to delay Brexit for a short time in order to strike a deal with the EU.

He added: "We have been really clear as a government that Remain should be on the ballot for any referendum and whatever the other options are we will campaign for Remain".

In a letter to members today, Mr Corbyn is silent on all of these questions.

"My sad conclusion is that the Labour Party is very plainly institutionally anti-Semitic, and its leader and his circle are anti-Semitic having never once made the right judgment call about an issue reflecting deep prejudice".

The manifesto promised to avoid no deal and secure an agreement with the European Union based around protecting jobs and workers' rights.

Lemina has told Southampton of his desire to leave the club after being dropped from the club's pre-season tour squad . The Gabon global is also wanted by Arsenal and Leicester City this summer, according to The Telegraph .

Paul Davies, Welsh Conservative assembly group leader, said: "First we saw Mark Drakeford and his cabinet ignoring the Welsh public by dismissing their voice in the democratic vote, and now we see it's a United Kingdom problem".

Months earlier, shadow Northern Ireland secretary and former leadership rival Owen Smith had been sacked for breaking party policy by calling for another referendum. More than half of British companies with foreign staff fear they would be hurt by the government's plans for a post-Brexit immigration system, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

"Party leadership must stop trying to shut people up and start listening".

But at last year's party conference, it was overwhelmingly agreed that a fresh public vote had to be kept "on the table".

Mr Corbyn's demands, however, were rejected by Mrs May.

Separately, Mr Corbyn came under mounting pressure on Brexit, after union leaders called for any deal negotiated by either the Tories or Labour to be put to a second referendum. They were joined by three Conservative MPs.

Would that vote be put to a referendum? Such a deal would also face a similar stand-off in a confirmatory referendum. Both were defeated by Parliament.

Hunt, a long-serving but lusterless senior minister who is now foreign secretary, said he offered experience, realism and a broader appeal than the divisive Johnson.

That led Johnson to call Hunt "defeatist".

In an interview with the BBC yesterday, he said there was no decision yet as to what Labour would argue for in a general election on Brexit.
