According to TMZ's report about the Tuesday (July 16) hearing for the case, prosecutors argued that Kelly is a danger to the community and the risk of obstruction is too great for him to be granted bond and released. His attorney, Steve Greenberg, submitted a not guilty plea.

A separate indictment in the Eastern District of NY charges Kelly with racketeering related to recruiting girls and women for illegal sexual activity across multiple states. She also argued that he might flee if released.

The singer also faces a separate five-count indictment from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of NY, which was unsealed on Friday.

He faces charges in Chicago and NY including having sex with minors and trying to cover up the crimes by paying off victims and their families.

Best known for hits "Bump n' Grind", and "I Believe I Can Fly", R. Kelly faces a maximum prison sentence of over 190 years for the Chicago charges and decades more for those filed in NY.

The judge has ordered that he remain in jail without bail. The 13 counts in Chicago involve child pornography, enticing a minor into illegal sexual activity and conspiracy to obstruct justice. The 52-year-old R&B singer faces decades more in NY.

R. Kelly is accused of preying "upon young women and teenagers whose dreams of meeting a superstar, soon turned into a nightmare of rape, child pornography and forced labour", Homeland Security Special Agent-in-Charge Angel Melendez said in a statement last week.

"Yes, sir", when the judge asked him if he understood the charges.

R. Kelly has faced sexual abuse allegations dating back to the 1990s, which were documented in a television series "Surviving R. Kelly" and aired in January.

Prosecutors say Kelly "has a unique ability to influence and intimidate witnesses and victims, and that continues to this day". He was arrested and jailed again in March for failure to pay his ex-wife child support of US$161,000.

In late May, a grand jury indicted him on 11 more charges pertaining to one of the four accusers, including aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault.

Kelly is expected to eventually be extradited to NY to face charges there.
