The Red Sox had not been in second place since they were 1-1 after play on March 29, tied with Tampa Bay and Toronto. He pitched 180.2 innings, a career high, and ended the season with a 1.89 ERA and 21 wins over 31 starts. We know that Snell has the potential to be brilliant, and if the Rays can survive the next 4-5 weeks without him, there might be a heckuva season finale in their future. He is expected to be back in September.

Snell, the 2018 AL Cy Young award victor, has not had almost as much success this season, getting off to a slow start and dealing with a freak toe injury, though pitching better of late. In May, starter Tyler Glasnow was sidelined with a forearm strain. Still, he managed to be effective, posting a 3.51 ERA in six starts. They have closed on Oakland, which leads for the second AL wild-card berth. However, the injuries have piled up fast for Tampa. There are two other teams within four games of that spot, guaranteeing a tight race over the final two months of the season. The Rays are 2-7 in their last nine games. They may be forced to trade for a starter prior to next week's trade deadline.

Tacko Signs New Deal with Celtics
Fans flocked to Thomas & Mack Center to see the 7-foot-6 wonder, who towered above every player he competed with or against. Fall, 23, averaged 7.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocked shots in five summer league games, and delighted Celtics fans.

Snell said he was happy it was not a more severe problem and has talked several times already with former Rays mate Nathan Eovoldi, who has twice undergone similar procedures.
