RCMP shift search for murder suspects to York Landing

The York Landing area is full of thick bush, 90 km over land, 200 km by vehicle southwest from Gillam.

Mounties issued a tweet requesting that people not disclose officer locations by posting photos of officers in the community to social media.

"If you think this is a tip, don't share it, send it to the police", she said. "I'm just so nervous right now thinking about it".

"I could imagine at this point they are getting pretty worn down, pretty desperate, they probably have been for quite some time", survivalist Sherman Kong, founder of Maple Leaf Survival, told CTV News Channel Monday.

McLeod and Schmegelsky are charged with second-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck of Vancouver.

A massive police manhunt has been launched in a remote part of northern Canada for a pair of teenager double murder suspects.

Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, are suspects in the murders of Lucas Fowler and Chynna Deese on the Alaska Highway, and the death of a man on Highway 37 near Dease Lake.

It was the absence of a work truck that made them suspicious, he said.

"The guy who paid for the gas - he was quiet, he didn't say anything, he was just looking down", she said.

Helicopters could be heard rumbling in the background during Massan's brief interview with The Star.

"We are urging everyone to remain indoors with windows and doors locked", Leroy Constant wrote.

Police had earlier been searching further east in the town of Gillam, aided by tracking dogs and drones.

An exhaustive search of the area failed to locate the duo who had either managed another miraculous escape or were never there in the first place. "If the tips are valid, it can create a substantial delay in the response by police and be detrimental to the overall investigation", Robert Cyrenne with RCMP says in a release.

Their efforts were bolstered Saturday when a Canadian Air Force CC-130H Hercules airplane landed in Gillam along with military personnel. An RCMP officer was also on board to direct the search.

Constant said he would be surprised if the pair made it to his community on foot because the northern terrain is treacherous.

The once peaceful, albeit swampy, town of York Landing, home to the York Factory Cree, is now exploding with visitors.

Community members are asking for privacy in this hard time, he said.

"The patrol groups will provide a sense of security to our First Nations communities that are now facing a great deal of uncertainty. We want to remind residents that we have a lot of police resources in the area, and that our priority is their safety".

Travis Bighetty told CBC News he and his partner spotted two "tall, slender individuals" moving very quickly - possibly spooked by the sound of their truck.

Police on July 23 identified the two suspects - who are from the Vancouver Island community of Port Alberni - and warned they are considered risky. "We will not be making any statement". Their camper was found in flames about 1.2 miles from Dyck's body.

Police will also be knocking on every door in the rural town with the hopes of finding the two suspects. RCMP Cpl. Julie Courchaine said police aren't confirming that's what happened, but investigators aren't ruling out any possibilities.

The two were considered "armed and dangerous" and the public have been warned not to approach them.
