While Halep fell to her knees to celebrate her win and kissed the trophy repeatedly, she seemed nearly as pleased to be wearing a little badge that meant she was now a member of the All England Club.

As for Williams, she surely has to try and reduce the noise and whole circus around her if she is to win another Grand Slam. The first one came in 2014. "You just feel light".

Seven-time Wimbledon victor and 23-time grand slam champion Williams responded by saying she wouldn't push equality aside.

Halep, ten years younger than Williams, was seeded seventh in the Ladies' draw at the All England Club. It was a little bit deer in the headlights for me.

"I think I played my best tennis ever", said Halep.

Slumping to her knees on match point, Halep jubilated in her second major victory. Two years ago she lost a French Open final from being a set and 3-0 up, and she had also lost two other grand slam titles before winning in Paris last year. Halep broke again for 5-2 and showed no nerves as she calmly held to claim the title Williams craved.

"I came on court and gave my best".

Couldn't have been any better, really.

I said, 'You beat me to this.'" 'I never admitted she was going to die, ' he said Saturday. This is not possible. "I wanna wake up from a dream.I have never felt like this".

Romania's richest man, Ion Tiriac, was in full flow on the Wimbledon players' lawn when, 10 minutes after leaving Centre Court, Simona Halep bounded up to give him a hug.

The match started ominously for the 37-year-old Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon champion who was seeking to win her first tournament win since giving birth to a daughter, Alexis Olympia, in September 2017.

Williams bluntly admitted she had not been at the races against a superior opponent. "I mean, I don't really think about it. I felt like, 'OK, what do I need to do to get to that level?'" Williams said.

It did not take long for Halep to demonstrate this was not going to be easy for Williams. She then went on to get apparel from Adidas before signing a contract for apparel with Nike in February 2018. "She didn't say anything because she was crying", said Halep. Williams recently revealed that she saw a therapist after that episode and sent Osaka a written apology.

Preying on the leaden-footed American, Halep ripped through Williams' defences with a devastating blend of mobility and precision.

Williams smacked 17 winners, but her differential was -9 because she littered the court with 26 unforced errors.

Williams, in stark contrast, came out looking a bit tight, short-arming shots and accumulating nine unforced errors before conjuring up a single victor. She was getting just a tremendous amount of balls back. She broke Williams again in the next game - again with a down-the-line backhand victor.

"I definitely knew that she was just playing her heart out".

Halep only had been as far as the semifinals once at Wimbledon until now. "I have fallen in love with grass", she said midway through The Championships, just days after associating the surface to "picnics". "It was one of my motivations before this tournament". So today it's real and I'm really happy.
