Transfer: Defender, Saint-Etienne undergoes medical at Arsenal

It's believed that the Gunners will sign the 18-year-old, and immediately loan him back to Saint-Etienne for a single season.

Arsenal are set to seal the signing of Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba, despite a late attempt from North London rivals Tottenham to hijack the deal.

The Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, said this week that he was hopeful of signing "three or four players" in this window, adding: "We are working, the club is working with the possibility to sign some new players to help us", he said.

Arsenal were set to announce a deal for the young Frenchman last week, only for Spurs to nip in with a bid at the last minute, which caused a delay to proceedings.

Ceballos has not travelled with the squad, however, as he is still on holiday due to his involvement with Spain Under-21s at the European Championship earlier in the summer.

A season-long loan back to St Etienne will therefore suit all parties.

Springboks backline coach and former sevens star Mzwandile Stick has hailed Jantjies for making a huge impact in his first Super Rugby season.

The report says we've agreed to pay Madrid a loan fee to have the 22-year-old for the next 12 months and we'll also cover his £3m wages but no option to buy clause is expected to be included in the deal. It may sound pedantic on our end but it's a clear indicator of this guys mindset when he's wheeled out to talk about Celtic when he's watched more mid-table bore fests in the Premier League than Celtic games since he retired.

The deal will also include a number of payment instalments, so the transfer won't eat too much into the Gunners' budget for this summer.

There would only be one if Celtic accepted a bid for the player and Arsenal were forthcoming with funds.
