His supporters cheered when he entered building.

"We believe that had we been given an opportunity to prepare Mr. Zuma, to advise him about people's names that he may mention, that he can't do so without those people being given notice, this process today would be much better".

The former president is accused of fostering a culture of corruption during a nine-year reign before he was ousted in 2018 by the ruling ANC party and replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa.

He seemed to suggest that the death of his son, Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma, who was 25, in July previous year after a short illness may have been the result of foul play.

Zuma denied that his relationship with the Gupta family was corrupt, or that they influenced any of the political appointments he made.

Former Bosasa operations head Angelo Agrizzi claimed Zuma was bribed by his then boss, Gavin Watson, using former SAA board chair, Dudu Myeni.

They all deny allegations of wrongdoing.

Zuma said Ramatlhodi was once recruited as a spy by the apartheid government while studying in Lesotho.

Maseko told the commission past year that Zuma called him and asked him to help the Guptas secure R600m of government advertising for their media houses.

"This commission, according to those who are implementing things, must be the grave of Zuma", he said.

Zuma arrived at the hearing to the sounds of cheering and applause in the public gallery. "It's an exaggeration, with the aim of reinforcing the narrative against Zuma", he said himself.

"I don't know why South Africa is not actually investigating every company which has worked with government, and why we are actually targeting one particular company and family", Magashule said.

The commission had heard evidence from a number of witnesses, including former ministers of state, implicating Zuma in a range of activities, among them his closeness to the three Gupta brothers who allegedly fleeced a number of government organisations of billions of rand.

The two families became so closely linked that a joint term was coined for them - the "Zuptas".

Asked about an incident where one of the Indian-born Guptas allegedly offered former ANC lawmaker Vytjie Mentor the position of minister of public enterprises, Zuma said on Tuesday: "I know nothing about it", repeating the same phrase several times and once letting out a chuckle. "I am handing them over to you and I hope the ones he is going to mention are prepared because he is going to out them", said Sikhakhane.

It is alleged that compliance was rewarded with money and promotion, while disobedience was punished with dismissal.
