"If things don't go well and I feel like it might take me a little longer to get up to this level, then that's definitely an option", he said.

Gasquet also comes into this with two wins and a run to the round of 16 at the Montreal Masters, so has the slight edge coming into this, as he searches to snap a six-match losing streak - but Murray is pain free and more importantly has the joy back in his tennis.

Despite his return to the singles circuit, Murray will skip the US Open, though the 32-year-old plans to play in both the doubles and mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows.

Murray, who appeared set for retirement amid continued hip issues following his five-set loss in the first round of the Australian Open in January, returned to play doubles in June after undergoing resurfacing surgery.

Murray beat home favourite Gasquet in four sets in the quarter-finals of the 2016 French Open at Roland Garros.

The U.S. Open's wild-card timing led Murray to decide against playing in NY. "It's close to Macau and Hong Kong, with an impressive stadium and I can't wait to experience it", Murray said on his Facebook page. There is still some improvement to be made, though it will take time. "I thought it maybe would have changed my perspective completely on things, but I'm sitting here disappointed, which I think is probably a good thing, and if I want to get back to playing at a high level, if I was sort of just happy to be back on the court and not really anxious about the outcome, then I'd be a bit maybe concerned about that". If his level is not competitive with the top players and the bad draws that inevitably lie ahead, the Scot admitted he would consider dropping down to ATP Challenger events. "There's nothing for me to worry about, but I know it's easy to say that but when you get on the court, psychologically it can be tricky".

The women's Rogers Cup champion, Canadian Bianca Andreescu, also withdrew from Cincinnati to rest for the U.S. Open. Along with Murray, it has already signed up Stefanos Tsitsipas, Roberto Bautista Agut, Borna Coric, Gael Monfils, Nick Kyrgios, and Alex De Minaur.

Unseeded Venus Williams won the last four games against qualifier Lauren Davis for a 7-5, 6-2 victory, earning a second-round match with fifth-seeded and defending champion Kiki Bertens. In the Men's Doubles at SW19, he and his partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert lost in four sets in Round Two.
