Bernie Sanders Releases Green New Deal Plan to ‘Save the World’

The two-time presidential candidate, now polling behind frontrunner Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren, earlier this year signed onto a version of the sweeping Green New Deal, introduced by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Despite not voting for the Green New Deal in the senate this past winter, Vermont Democratic Socialist presidential candidate Bernie Sanders introduced a Green New Deal of his own on Thursday as part of his 2020 campaign platform. The campaign said its Green New Deal plan will pay for itself over 15 years, despite the price tag.

The senator's plan, the Times notes, is more expensive than that of any other candidate in the race; for comparison, former Vice President Joe Biden has released a climate change plan that calls for spending $1.7 trillion over 10 years.

The ambitious plan could be an attempt by Sanders to position himself as the top climate change candidate in the Democratic primary, after Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington ended his climate change-focused bid this week.

"President Trump thinks that climate change is a hoax", Sanders said. "I have seven grandchildren, and I'm going to be damned if I'm going to leave them a planet that is unhealthy and uninhabitable". Sanders pledges to end unemployment by "creating 20 million jobs needed to solve the climate crisis". Sanders' plan would also $200 billion towards the worldwide Green Climate Fund. Sanders would also invest $40 billion in a Climate Justice Resiliency Fund, which would help "under-resourced groups", communities of color, Native Americans, those with disabilities, children and the elderly to "recover from and prepare for" the effects of climate change.

Sanders' version calls for creating 20 million union jobs he says are necessary for averting climate disaster, phasing out fossil fuels by midcentury, providing $200 billion to the United Nations to aid developing countries in slashing emissions, and spearheading new projects in solar, wind, and geothermal energy. And while the original resolution doesn't exclude the use of nuclear power or developing technologies like carbon capture, Sanders' proposal prohibits so-called "false solutions", specifically naming nuclear, carbon sequestration, and geoengineering among them. For some, that undermines the value of the plan.

The language in Sanders's plan indicates he's ready to tussle with Big Oil: He says he would direct his Department of Justice to go after fossil fuel companies for both civil and criminal penalties. "We need to have every option on the table".
