Charlie Manuel, 75, returns to Philadelphia Phillies' bench as hitting coach

According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the Phillies are hiring Manuel as their new hitting coach, replacing John Mallee.

With 44 games remaining in what so far has been an underwhelming season, the Phillies hope that Manuel can spark an offense that has been wildly inconsistent all season. Slugger Rhys Hoskins went 2 for 24 on the trip and has just one RBI this month.

After he stepped down as manager, Manuel served as a special adviser to the general manager.

Philadelphia has had three managers (Ryne Sandberg, Pete Mackanin, Gabe Kapler) since firing Manuel. He came under fire during the team's recent slump, which saw them fall from first in the division to fourth behind the Mets.

The Phillies are 60-58 for ninth in the NL, going 3-7 in their last 10 games. Manuel is about as old-school of a coach as you can get, but he's had great success in his career with the Phillies and Indians.

Under Mallee, described as an analytically-based hitting coach, the club has disappointed offensively, posting a.738 OPS this season, which ranks 12th in the National League and 22nd in the majors. Notably, Rhys Hoskins is hitting.186 since the All-Star Break. Through Sunday they ranked in the bottom half of the National League in nearly every hitting category: ninth in runs; 10th in hits; 11th in home runs; 10th in on-base percentage; 12th in slugging; 12th in weighted on-base average; and 10th in weighted runs created plus (91).
