Since last year's summit in Charlevoix, Que., it has become even more hard for countries to find a common language.

President Trump arrived in France for the annual G7 Summit, with the flagging global economy and ongoing trade war with China framing his visit, and the meeting potentially further exposing deep rifts between the USA and other countries over trade and climate change.

Macron set an agenda for the group - France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States - that included the defence of democracy, gender equality, education and the environment. "This is not our initiative, this trade and tariff struggle, but we have to be ready and we are ready".

"They have figured out how to deal with this president", said Jon Alterman, a senior vice-president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. That was the backdrop for a late addition to his summit schedule - lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron outside the opulent Hotel du Palais. "Everybody's getting along. I think we will accomplish a lot this weekend", he said.

But, luckily, the political leaders from the other G7 nations are not anxious about Mr Trump leaving the alliance next year as the USA is due to host it, which means he would not be likely to pull out until 2021, when it is most likely to be held in the UK.

Tusk dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's recent second attempt to convince the other countries to allow Russian Federation to return to the summit table, restoring the G8.

Wall Street stocks slumped Friday after Trump escalated his trade war with China that is seen as responsible for a global slowdown.

Other G7 leaders have rebuffed this, but Trump, who will host the G7 next year, is unlikely to give up easily.

While Johnson finds it tough going with Merkel and Macron, he's likely to encounter a much warmer Trump, who says the European Union has "not treated the United Kingdom very well".

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the summit in the resort town of Biarritz, said one of his main objectives is to "convince all our partners that tensions, especially trade tensions, are bad for everyone".

Just before leaving Washington, D.C., on Friday, Trump increased tariffs on Chinese imports, and threatened to force all American companies to leave China.

While on French soil, Trump also intends to raise with Macron and the other leaders the issue of a digital services tax that France has imposed on major technology companies such as Google and Facebook despite Trump's threats of retaliatory tariffs on French wine.

"I want to see a dialling down of tensions".

Rather than a day of royal banquets and lavish parades which many state visits involve, the G7 summit is about multilateralism and creating wider solutions to issues affecting countries around the world. During that meeting, the president gave an update on relations with France. Macron himself is deeply unpopular at home, and the yellow vest protesters who have plagued him since past year have followed him to Biarritz.

"It's more money for the rich and nothing for the poor. The leaders will hear us", he said.

French riot police briefly used water cannons and tear gas on Saturday to disperse anti-capitalism protesters in Bayonne, near Biarritz.

The rally was peaceful so far, after police said 17 people had been arrested as of Friday night amid clashes with protesters camped out near Hendaye.
