Facebook says it's getting closer to creating a mind-reading wearable device

In a study published today, UCSF researchers revealed that they have built upon that work and have successfully decoded brain activity as speech in real-time.

CNBC reports that Facebook has taken another step in developing its brain-computer interface, with the company's Reality Labs division working alongside researchers from the University of California, San Francisco to develop a device that can decode speech directly from the human brain onto a screen. They were then given a list of potential answers.

The research was funded under the Sponsored Academic Research Agreement with Facebook, which announced a "typing-by-brain" project in 2017.

Regina Dugan, who led the effort, but left the company after more than a year, told Facebook that she wanted a silent speech system to be created to type 100 words a minute directly from your brain.

Doctors have turned the brain signals for speech into written sentences in a research project that aims to transform how patients with severe disabilities communicate in the future.

"It's now bulky, slow, and unreliable", according to Facebook, but it could still one day make its way into the company's virtuality reality headsets or its planned augmented reality glasses.

The Trump administration official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly. North Korea is banned from any ballistic missile activity under United Nations Security Council resolutions.

"Currently, patients with speech loss due to paralysis are limited to spelling words out very slowly using residual eye movements or muscle twitches to control a computer interface", said UCSF neuroscientist Eddie Chang. To date, there is no prothesis scheme for expression that allows consumers to communicate at the velocity of ordinary people talk.

It could take a decade to develop alternative methods of measuring neural signals that provide the same accuracy as implanted electrodes without the same level of invasiveness, but Facebook says it thinks it can close the gap.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk's Neuralink company has applied to United States regulators for permission to start testing its own brain-hacking device on humans. Their algorithm was able to decode and transcribe a full set of spoken words and phrases in real time.

"It's never too early to start thinking through the important questions that will need to be answered before such a potentially powerful technology should make its way into commercial products", Facebook said.

As for the idea that Facebook might have access to tech that can read your thoughts - 'what was that Dave, you want to Facebook stalk your ex?' - Facebook said it will try and advance this tech in a non-creepy, ethical manner.

"As Chief Scientist Michael Abrash and the team at Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) see it, we're standing on the edge of the next great wave in human-oriented computing, one in which the combined technologies of AR and VR converge and revolutionize how we interact with the world around us - as well as the ways in which we work, play, and connect", Facebook said in its blog post.
