Japan's Empress Emeritus Michiko is to have surgery after being diagnosed with an early-stage breast cancer, public broadcaster NHK said on Friday, citing the Imperial Household Agency.

The agency says she has had regular checks on her mammary glands over the past decade or so, and no irregularities were found in the past 12 months.

Unlike similar warnings from the USA government, however, the State Department and embassy published a map of the protest route. In both cases, the embassy advised American citizens to avoid the areas where the demonstration would take place.

Michiko's husband, former Emperor Akihito, 85, abdicated the Chrysanthemum throne at the end of April. Michiko also had cataract operations in late June.

An ultrasound examination during a check-up last month revealed a mass in the royal's left breast, an agency spokesman said, and further examinations led to the diagnosis this month. She won't undergo surgery until at least September.

In her time as Empress, Michiko was adored by the Japanese people, especially for her kindness and sympathy. Catholic-educated Michiko Shoda and Akihito married on April 10, 1959, after what is known as their tennis court romance. Their close interactions have won them deep affection among Japanese.
