GOP Sen. Josh Hawley: Big Tech Embraces Addiction As A Business Model

Republican Senator Josh Hawley introduced a bill on Tuesday that would ban social media companies from using "addictive" features in their platforms and apps. Hawley's proposed bill is called the Social Media Addiction Reduction Technology (Smart) Act, and in it he proposes several steps the federal government can take to stop social media giants from capturing user attention "by using psychological tricks".

The legislation, if passed, would ban features like infinite scroll for news feeds and autoplay for videos.

A Snapstreak occurs when two Snapchat friends have snapped each other within 24 hours for more than three consecutive days.

Since taking office in January, Hawley has quickly established himself as the foremost Republican critic of big tech, introducing a spate of bills created to protect consumer data and prevent political censorship on social media platforms.

Badges and other awards linked to engagement with the platform: Providing a user with an award for engaging with the social media platform (such as a badge or other recognition of a user's level of engagement with the platform) if such award does not substantially increase access to new or additional services, content, or functionality. Fox News has reached out to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat with a request for comment on this story. In June, he introduced a bill that would strip away liability protection from tech companies when it comes to third-party content posted on their platforms. Then again, social media addiction is a real thing, and some people even want it classified as a disease. For example, companies would have to design "accept" and "decline" boxes using the same formats, fonts, and sizes.

The bill would also require that social media platforms allow users to easily opt out of using a certain feature, rather than pushing them toward consenting by making that option more visually appealing or accessible on the platform. This could also be used to impose caps on the amount of time users spend on social media.
